Would you want to build Legos?
Artist Statement
Would you want to build Legos with me? A question where one simple answer could change the way we see human connections. In this project, I asked people this simple question to further the understanding of what it means to have a genuine interaction with what we would consider strangers. The older we get, creating friendships with people changes and as a college student who struggles to make friends, this project is a way to combine my passion for Legos into an experience that could last a lifetime.
Why Legos? It’s a building block to build confidence in people and creates this childlike experience where the person has the freedom to explore their creativity with a hands-on experience. While we build Legos, I ask them about their journey to where they are now and what it means to be a friend. Each person has the chance to share their voice while expressing their creative side.
By the end of the project, I didn’t have all the answers to solve world hunger, cancer, or what it exactly means to make connections with people. But an understanding that even through all our differences, struggles, hopes, and dreams, everyone has a story that deserves to be heard. Everyone on some level has a desire for human connection.
